How to Antique Furniture With Paint and Stain
You could hire professional painters for a home makeover, but antiquing furniture is a fun DIY job. Even first-timers could end up with stunning custom pieces. An old, unfinished piece of wood like a table, dresser, or desk is the best canvas for antiquing furniture. You will first need to gather your materials. These are the things you will need
- Acrylic paint or latex in the color you choose
- Water-based primer
- Use oil-based stain as a glaze
- Polyurethane
- Sanding block or sandpaper
- Paintbrushes
- Stain removal: Use a cloth rag
- Steel wool
After you have gathered all your supplies, follow these steps
- Take out shelves and drawers. To remove handles, fasteners, and hardware, use a screwdriver.
- Sand all furniture and leave a smooth surface to be primed.
- A thin layer of primer should be applied to the entire area. Let it dry completely.
- Apply a coat in the color you choose using long strokes. You can add more texture to your application by using a wider brush. This will give it an antique appearance. Let it dry completely.
- After the paint has dried, you can lightly sand the edges and areas of your piece that you want to look weathered. Steel wool can be used to achieve a “rubbed through” look.
- You will now apply your stain to the paint, giving it an antique look. Apply stain to a small area of the piece with a clean paintbrush. Next, use your cloth to wipe off most of the stain. Only leave it in the recessed areas. This will give the stain an aged, intentional appearance.
- After the stain has dried completely apply a coat of polyurethane to seal and protect the piece.
- Install any hardware or doors. To complete the antique look, you might consider replacing the hardware.
